Preparing Your Installation Area: Step-by-step guide on how to clean and prepare surfaces for the best adhesion of LED light strips.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to properly clean and prepare surfaces for maximum adhesion of LED light strips — whether you're using the stock adhesive, extra tape, or mounting clips:
✅ Surface Prep for LED Strip Adhesion
Step 1: Choose the Right Surface
- Ideal: smooth, non-porous surfaces (metal, painted wood, glass, sealed plastic).
- Avoid: raw timber, dusty brick, textured paint, oily plastics — unless sealed or modified.
Step 2: Remove Loose Debris
- Use a clean, dry cloth or soft brush to wipe off dust, sawdust, or dirt.
Step 3: Degrease the Surface
Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) – 70% or higher.
- Use a lint-free cloth or paper towel dampened (not soaked).
- Wipe the full length of where the strip will go.
- Let dry for 1–2 minutes.
🛑 Avoid methylated spirits or acetone — they can leave residue or damage paint.
Step 4: Sand (Only if Needed)
- Lightly scuff glossy or super-slick surfaces (like powder-coated metal or glass) with a Scotch-Brite pad or 1200–2000 grit sandpaper.
- Wipe again with IPA after sanding.
Step 5: Mark Mounting Line
- Use a pencil or low-tack painter’s tape to mark a guideline for straight install.
Step 6: Pre-Warm the Area
In cold weather or cold surfaces:
- Warm the surface slightly with a heat gun or hair dryer to improve adhesive tack.
- Ideal surface temp: above 15°C (60°F).
Step 7: Apply Strip
- Peel a small section of the backing at a time — don’t expose the whole adhesive.
- Press down firmly and evenly along the strip *** Use a roller or flat edge tool if needed.
Step 8: Cure Time
- Avoid handling or powering up for at least 1 hour.
- Full bond strength in 24–48 hours.
🧩 Bonus Tips
- For tough surfaces: use 3M VHB tape or a silicone-based adhesive like Loctite 401 + primer.
- For ceilings or vertical installs: use mounting clips every 300–500mm for insurance.
